Reading

Analysing Persuasive Texts

During this unit, students will be learning about persuasive texts.  This will include lessons on:

  • analysing texts for persuasive devices
  • the main idea and issue in a persuasive text
  • how persuasive texts are organised
  • how topic sentences are used in paragraphs.

By the end of this unit, students will be able to compare and contrast the features of a persuasive text to those of a narrative.

Making Connections to Self, to Text, and to World

During this unit, students will be working on making connections to self, to text and to the world. Students will be involved with lessons on:

  • how to reflect on a text
  • how to write a written text response
  • how to make a text to self, text to text, and text to world connections.

By the end of this unit, students will choose a ‘good fit book’ and demonstrate how they can make connections to the text.

Writing

Writing with Purpose

During this unit, students will learn how to write with purpose. This will include lessons on:

  • finding a good idea through brainstorming 
  • deciding on the purpose of their writing
  • choosing an audience and text genre
  • planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.

By the end of this unit, students will write a text of their own choice using their knowledge around writing with purpose. 

Persuasive Poster

During this unit, students will be learning about persuasive writing.  This will include lessons on:

  • persuasive devices
  • organising a persuasive text
  • persuasive and emotive language
  • revising and improving our arguments
  • publishing in an appropriate format.

By the end of this unit, students will have created a persuasive advertising poster to demonstrate their learning.

Numeracy

Multiplication and Division

During this unit, students will be learning about multiplication and division.  This will include lessons on:

  • the language of multiplication and division
  • strategies to multiply and divide
  • choosing the right strategy
  • problem solving
  • analysing equations for errors
  • worded problems.

By the end of this unit, students will show their understanding of multiplication and division through an open-ended, problem-solving task.

Chance and Data

During this unit, students will be learning about chance and data.  This will include lessons on:

  • language of chance and data
  • analysing graphs, tables and data
  • creating tables and graphs
  • chance as a fraction
  • chance and data in everyday situations.

By the end of this unit, students will show their understanding by creating a game of chance and testing it, collecting and graphing the data on the chance of winning the prizes.

Fractions and Decimals

During this unit, students will be learning about fractions and decimals.  This will include lessons on:

  • modelling and representing fractions
  • comparing fractions
  • locating fractions on number lines
  • adding and subtracting fractions on a number line.

Extension learning includes:

  • equivalent fractions
  • decimals and fractions.

By the end of this unit, students will show their understanding of fractions and decimals by through an open-ended task and test.

Shapes

During this unit, students will be learning about shapes.  This will include lessons on:

  • names of 2D and 3D shapes
  • making 3D shapes
  • prefix numbers that shapes are named after (tri, quad, pent, hex, sept, oct, non, dec).

By the end of this unit, students will show their understanding of shapes by creating a two-dimensional representation of familiar environments.
