READING:
Analysing Information Texts
In this unit, students will focus on their ability to read and analyse non-fiction texts. Students will develop their knowledge and skills around:
- The features of non-fiction texts and where they are used.
- Researching skills, reliable sources, plagiarism and note-taking/summarising.
- Viewing large pieces of research and use their knowledge of non-fiction texts to scan for relevant information (skimming).
- Constructing a detailed response when analysing texts.
- The effect of formal and informal language.
- The effect of descriptive language and specific terminology.
By the end of this unit, students will be assessed on their ability to read, analyse and interpret a non-fiction text.
WRITING:
Writing to Inform
During this unit, students will be introduced to non-fiction texts and their different features. They will explore:
- The features of information/non-fiction texts.
- How to construct an informative paragraph with a clear topic sentence and relevant supporting details.
- The formal language features of an information report, ensuring that scientific language or topic-specific language is used.
- The role of descriptive language in an informative piece of writing.
Students will be writing to inform on a topic of their choice. Over the span of this unit, they will research, draft and write a piece on their topic.
MATHS:
Multiplication and Division
During this unit, students will build on their understanding of multiplication and division. They will use this understanding to solve a variety of real-life problems. This will involve:
- Using a variety of strategies to multiply two-digit by one and two-digit numbers
- Dividing large numbers by a single digit, including those resulting in a remainder
- Identifying both factors and multiples of a number and using this knowledge to solve problems
- Using the connection between multiplication and division to solve equivalent number sentences
- Applying their knowledge to solve worded problems
By the end of the unit, students will solve a variety of worded problems and use efficient methods to calculate both multiplication and division sums.
Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
In this unit, students will work on what fractions and decimals are, how they are related and how we can use them in many different situations. The skills that will be focused on are:
- Comparing fractions and exploring the basic relationship between fractions and decimals.
- Representing fractions and decimals through diagrams, words and number format.
- Placing fractions and decimals on a number line between 0 and 1 whole and counting along a number using common unit fractions.
- Finding equivalent values (e.g. 1/2 = 2/4 = 0.5) by using fraction walls and multiplying the numerator and denominator of fractions by a shared number.
- Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa.
- Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators e.g. (2/5 + 1/5)
- Solving fraction and decimal problems in worded and numerical form.
By the end of this unit, students will have demonstrated their understanding through their completed bookwork, engaging in class discussions and completing assessments.
INQUIRY:
Gold
In this unit, students will learn about the gold rush. This unit will be a lead in to their camp to Sovereign Hill. Throughout this experience they will explore aspects of what it would have been like for different cultural groups and minorities on the goldfields in Australia.
Through their investigation, students will learn how certain events not only affected the gold rush but contributed towards turning Australia into the country we know today.
By the end of this unit, students will show their understanding through various avenues and give insight to the activities they will experience in their upcoming camp.
