Reading: Narratives
During this unit, students are developing their understanding of reading narratives.
The focus skills taught are:
- Understanding the purpose of a narrative.
- Identifying the literary elements such as morals, characters, settings, problems & solutions.
- Recognising narrative sequences (beginning, middle and end).
- Exploring different types of narratives (such as fairy tales, picture books, descriptive rhyming).
- Identifying the key events in a narrative and how it relates to the author’s message.
- Exploring context relevant vocabulary (descriptive and emotional language, nouns, verbs and adjectives).
- Make connections between texts and students personal experiences
By the end of this unit, students will be able to recognise and understand various elements of a narrative such as characters, events, settings and images. Students will be exposed to a variety of narrative stories throughout the term and continue to develop their interest and enjoyment in reading.
Writing: Narratives
During this unit, students are developing their understanding of narratives.
The focus skills taught are:
- Including different literary elements that can be used in narratives (morals, characters, settings, beginning, middle (problem) and end (solution).
- Making a simple writing plan to create, develop and organise their story ideas
- Word choice (nouns & adjectives) organisation, conventions, sentence fluency
- Re-reading, revising and editing their final piece.
- Publishing their creative writing piece.
By the end of this unit, students will be able to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish a narrative, and make reasonable attempts for correct structure, spelling and punctuation.
6 Traits of Writing
During this unit, students will be visiting and exploring the writing traits of ‘Conventions’ and ‘Ideas’. The focus skills taught are-
- upper case letters at the beginning of all sentences and for names.
- correct punctuation use throughout a piece of writing, not just at the very end of the piece.
- appropriate use of other punctuation marks such as commas, exclamation marks and question marks.
- expressing a main message/idea that is clear to the reader and makes sense.
- adding detailed information to create a picture in the reader’s mind.
Numeracy:
Place Value
During this unit the students are developing their understanding of place value using a variety of resources to explore and problem solve open ended tasks. The focus skills are:
- Understanding that a three-digit number comprises of hundreds, tens and ones.
- Understanding that the value of a number changes depending on whether it is placed in the hundreds, tens or ones column
- Representing three-digit numbers multiple ways, eg numerals, expanded form, words and hands-on resources such as unifix, MAB blocks and icypole sticks.
By the end of this unit students will understand the value of each digit in a 3-digit number.
Inquiry – Resilience Project
During this ongoing unit the students are developing their personal and social capabilities through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). The focus skills taught are:
- Self-awareness: Personal awareness, Emotional awareness, Reflective practice
- Self-management: Emotional regulation, Perseverance and Adaptability
- Social awareness: Empathy, Relational awareness, Community awareness
- Social management: Communication, Collaboration, Decision-making, Conflict resolution.
At the completion of this unit, students will have a stronger understanding of Emotional Literacy with the ability to identify and use resilience strategies for emotional self-management and social wellbeing.
